Carthage

Of course we went through Carthage on our trip through the Midwest and stopped at the old jail where the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum were martyred.  Here are some of the pictures we took.

Oh, and did I mention that it was very hot when we where there in late July!

This is the kitchen used by the jailers family on the first floor of the jail. They actually lived at the jail.

This is the maximum security cell on part of the second floor.
The mob charged up these stairs to attack Joseph, Hyrum, John Taylor, and Willard Richards.
The four Mormon prisoners were in this other upstairs room when the mob stormed the jail.  A bullet hole from the attack can be seen in the middle of the door.

This is the window the Prophet jump out of when trying to evade the gunshots.
